How to improve libido with plants?

¿Cómo mejorar la libido con plantas?

Medicinal plants to increase libido

Medicinal plants have been used traditionally throughout history to improve libido. Some of the most recognized are:

  • Damiana flower or Turnera diffusa: Various studies have shown beneficial effects in increasing copulatory patterns; an explanation for this is the high levels of flavonoids found within the plant, which exert biological activity in the central nervous system. Flavonoids and their derivatives improve sexual behavior and increase Nitric Oxide levels in vascular tissue, a primary regulator of penile and clitoral erection. It also has receptor activity as a phytoprogestin, which means it has a chemical structure similar to estrogens, which are female sex hormones.
  • Ginkgo biloba and Ginseng: the leaves and extract of Ginkgo biloba and Ginseng stimulate the production of Nitric Oxide (NO) and contribute to the relaxation of smooth muscle.
  • Tribulus terrestris: shows significant improvements in desire, arousal, lubrication, satisfaction, and pain. It also improves  sperm production and increases levels of testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA).
  • Maca: This Peruvian root is famous for its effects in improving sexual desire, enhanced erectile function, and a higher frequency of sexual intercourse in couples who consume it.
  • Ashwagandha: Known for its adaptogenic properties, it can help reduce stress and, therefore, improve libido.

In a study conducted by Thomas Y. Ito, Aileen S. Trant & Mary Lake Polan

A mixture containing ginseng, along with L-arginine, ginkgo, and damiana, was used during 4 weeks of treatment and showed greater satisfaction with their sex life in general in 73.5% of patients compared to 37.2% of the placebo group. Perimenopausal women showed significant improvements in the frequency of sexual intercourse and satisfaction with sexual relations using the same mixture,

How to improve it in cases of illness?

When a decrease in libido is related to an illness, it is fundamental to address both the underlying condition and sexual desire:

  1. Medical consultation: It is essential to speak with a healthcare professional who can evaluate the problem and offer appropriate treatments, which may include changes in medication or hormonal therapy.
  2. Nutritional consultation: there are many nutritional aspects that are important in this process, as there are hormonal regulators that can, in most cases, reverse sexual dysfunctions with simple lifestyle changes. Therefore, eating properly and including specific nutrients can contribute to promoting sexual health.
  3. Psychological therapy: Cognitive-behavioral therapy can be useful for managing problems of anxiety, depression, or low self-esteem that affect sexual desire.
  4. Emotional support: Communication and mutual support in a couple can be crucial to overcoming the challenges presented by illness.
